Finding the undernourished root
What if the behavior isn't the problem?
-
When a difficult moment keeps happening, it's natural to focus on the behavior you can see.
-
I start somewhere else. Not because the behavior should be ignored, but because small changes before the difficult moment can completely reshape the outcome.
-
The goal isn't simply to stop a behavior. It's to build the skills and conditions that allow us to help children navigate everyday life more successfully.
-
In behavioral practice, these factors are often called antecedents. At Thriving Roots, we "start before the behavior" to reshape everyday family life.
The Pillars of Growth
My approach is built on the idea that strong foundations grow through intentional experiences in everyday life.

Attention Before Instruction
Before expecting a child to respond, we first make sure we have their attention. Clear communication begins with connection.

Clear, Achievable Expectations
Children need to understand what's being asked and have the developmental readiness to accomplish it. Expectations should challenge growth without setting children up to fail.

Choice within Boundaries
Children benefit from meaningful choice within how they transition.
"Walk to your room, or hold my hand"
The destination stays consistent. The child chooses how to get there.

Consistency Builds Independence
Consistency isn't simply repeating the same instruction. Predictable boundaries and routines allow children to understand what comes next, practice successfully, and gradually manage more for themselves.
The goal is to help children learn how to function in the world around them.
A bedtime routine isn't only about getting to bed.

A family meal isn't only about eating.

Getting dressed isn't only about putting on clothes.

Within those ordinary experiences, children are learning to communicate, make decisions, follow sequences, recognize other people's needs, tolerate transitions, solve problems, participate in relationships, and gradually take responsibility for themselves.

Thriving Roots helps families recognize and intentionally use these everyday opportunities for development.

The goal isn't perfect behavior. It's capable children and connected families.
